A simplistic example, though not perfect, is apropos here: a company sells a product for 1 dollar which costs 1 dollar to make (assuming arguendo to cover fixed expenses - no profit). The fed over-printing / creating dollars like mad to the point where it now takes 2 dollars to render the same purchasing power of  1 dollar when the goods were produced. The company sells the products for 2 dollars (the previous equivalent of 1 dollar before debasement). The company is now showing earnings 1 dollar per unit sold, yet in real terms, theyve gotten no more than the equivalent of that 1 dollar per unit. (If youve been to the grocery store lately, particularly the last 1-2 months, Ive found meats, etc., to be up 50-100%, etc.). The same obfuscating manipulations are applicable to assets generally, and to those pieces of paper called stocks which are even worse for the wear since churn-and-earn commissions at lightning computerized speed are being subtracted from this illusory enhanced value which in reality doesnt exist at all. ( Such manipulations from currency translation also provide arbitrage opportunities though similarly largely ultimately subtracted from no real value being created. ) This is why fraudulent wall street loves the feds QEs and dollar debasement / over-printing / creating and also why its been a dismal failure and a net negative in real economic terms as seen on main street and in the decimation of the middle class and growing ranks of the poor. In the analysis of securities, this would be considered the quality of earnings factor that goes into the assignment of a p/e multiple to the projected earnings. Sufficeth to say, this is no longer done on wall street in any real or legitimate fashion, if at all. Indeed, its a fair statement to say that security analysis is no longer a practice as same was considered, once upon a time, by value investors / analysts. Moodys just lowered Connecticuts general obligation rating to negative from stable citing among other things depleted reserves with slim prospects for near-term replenishment.

The state has approximately $14 billion in outstanding general obligation bondsThe negative outlook reflects Connecticuts depleted reserves with slim prospects for near-term replenishment; pension funded ratios that are among the lowest in the country and likely to remain well below average; and high combined fixed costs for debt service and post employment benefits relative to the states budget. In the absence of a clearly articulated plan to achieve meaningful improvement in the states pension funded ratios and reduce its fixed costs, as well as progress toward adequate reserve levels, Connecticuts rating could be downgraded.

The news comes just a day after it was revealed that its tri-state neighbor New Jersey is seeking a $2.25 billion bridge loan from JPMorgan Chase. The Garden State has decided to take a bank loan instead of issuing bonds because the later would require more time to raise the necessary amount of cash to pay its bills.

Whitney, the analyst who has been sharply criticized for her prediction of widespread municipal defaults this year, was on CNBC this morning discussing the bridge loan. From the interview:

I wouldnt read too much into this one financing. It could be business as usual. Thats not the issue, Whitney said in a live interview. New Jerseys fiscal woes are far bigger than them accessing a line of credit or a new loan.

My work shows that the new recession has started. The May 9 issue of the Wellington Letter was headlined:  Return of the Double-Dip.  At the time, economists were looking for a great economy in the second half. Now they talk about a soft patch.  Over the past 33 years, we have called the start of every recession, often on the exact month, or within one month, of the official start as determined one year later by the official arbiter of recession, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).

How can we be in recession now when the GDP still shows growth? Because of improper inflation adjustments. Real GDP growth, the headline number, is nominal growth minus the rate of inflation. However, inflation is far understated for political reasons.

Currently, the GDP deflator is 1.8%, which hardly reflects the true rise in prices. Therefore, what is counted as growth, is actually price increases. Actual inflation, according to free market economists who calculate inflation as it was done in 1980 before the politician re-engineered it, is now more than 11%. Using that to adjust GDP for inflation, would show that the economy is now in a very sharp contraction.

When the current euphoric earnings forecasts of Wall Street finally reflect that via significant earnings downgrades, the stock market will see a serious adjustment as well.

On July 18, Goldman Sachs (GS) substantially lowered its economic growth forecast. Marketwatch.com had this headline:  Goldman Sachs slashes Economic Forecasts. The next step will be for them to substantially reduce earnings forecasts for the S&P 500.

Will the phase II be as bad as the 2008 crisis? The last crisis was confined to the private sector, i.e. financial institutions. The next one will be involve the threatened default of entire countries. The last time, the central banks bailed out the financial firms and even Warren Buffett bailed out several firms. The main articles of UN Security Council Resolution 242 (11/67) call for:

Resolution 338 (10/73) reiterates the importance of Resolution 242, and calls upon the sides to begin negotiations with the aim of achieving a just and durable peace.

Interpretations

The interpretation of the resolutions is the object of political and legal controversy primarily regarding two points:

Extent of Israeli withdrawal - The first article of Resolution 242 is an object of controversy because of differences in wording between the English and the French versions of the text. The English version talks about Israeli withdrawal "from territories...", while the French version talks about Israeli withdrawal "from the territories" (des territories...). Thus, the addition of the word "the" in the French version implies that Israel is required to withdraw from all the occupied territories.

Solution to the refugee problem - UN Resolution 242 talks about a "just settlement" to the refugee problem without addressing the specific solution that appears in UN General Assembly resolution 194. Arab countries, as well as others, interpret Resolution 194 as the basis for the "right of return" of Palestinian refugees1. Hence, they argue that Resolution 194 is the interpretation of a "just settlement" that appears in Resolution 242. However, because Resolution 242 does not specifically mention 194, Israel does not interpret it as harboring the "right of return" and therefore sees it as a possible basis for the solution to the refugee problem.

When I testified at the Grand Jury Proceeding I made sure his threat on my life was set forth in prima facie fashion so as to maximize the DAs position with both felonies ( he went to prison pled out ). [ .. (the following incident is my personal experience: black perps, white victims).. while walking through Military Park (a sliver of a park - more a pedestrian thoroughfare/cement walks) in newark, new jersey on the way to the bank during lunch hour, I heard the clearly audible screams/cries of what turned out to be an old lady on the ground with blood streaming from her mouth. I ran toward the sound of the cries, the source of which I could not see because there were so many people in and about this thoroughfare so as to block any vision of the source of the cries. When I came to the woman, on the ground, blood streaming from her mouth, I asked what happened, to which she responded she had been hit in the mouth and knocked to the ground, her purse stolen/put inside her shopping bag, and she pointed out the criminal casually now walking across the main street. Nobody stopped to help her, many having passed her by. I slammed the thug to the ground so hard that, in light of all the blood and confusion (limbic system / adrenalin flow) I thought I had been stabbed (the blood was from his elbows hitting the pavement so hard - no one helped / a crowd gathered / an undercover cop happened along). When I testified at the Grand Jury Proceeding I made sure his threat on my life was set forth in prima facie fashion so as to maximize the DAs position with both felonies ( he went to prison pled out ). The other case I wrote about here ( This was included on my website in the Psychology forum discussion of bystander effect / diffusion of responsibility. ) - Having had occasion to have run down a mugger in newark, n.j. who apparently had followed a girl from the bank on her way to the bursar to pay tuition, though in pretty good shape, I was astounded by how totally exhausting such a pursuit was, how much like rubber my arms were when I traded punches with the perpetrator, and truth be told, if I had a flashlight on my belt, I have little doubt that I would have probably used it to subdue the perp (a police officer here in California was the object of intense criticism for having used a flashlight to subdue a criminal after a long chase so I included that here) . The girl was not that seriously injured, did get her pocketbook and tuition back, and the criminal went to jail (where they belong). The other thing about such a pursuit that amazed me was that no one else assisted the girl or me despite being in a position to do so. I was also mugged by 4 blacks and 2 hispanics in an incident here in Los Angeles, CA. The matter was assigned to FBI Agent Ron Barndollar and we remained in touch for in excess of a decade until he abruptly retired (our last conversation prior to his retirement related to the case and parenthetically, Rudy Giuliani whose father I stated had been an enforcer for the mob to which he registered disbelief and requested I prove it, which I did he served 12 years in prison, aggravated assault/manslaughter? and no, there is no Chinese wall of separation Andrew Maloneys the one that prosecuted gotti).

A simplistic example, though not perfect, is apropos here: a company sells a product for 1 dollar which costs 1 dollar to make (assuming arguendo to cover fixed expenses - no profit). The fed over-printing / creating dollars like mad to the point where it now takes 2 dollars to render the same purchasing power of  1 dollar when the goods were produced. The company sells the products for 2 dollars (the previous equivalent of 1 dollar before debasement). The company is now showing earnings 1 dollar per unit sold, yet in real terms, they’ve gotten no more than the equivalent of that 1 dollar per unit. (If you’ve been to the grocery store lately, particularly the last 1-2 months, I’ve found meats, etc., to be up 50-100%, etc.). The same obfuscating manipulations are applicable to assets generally, and to those pieces of paper called stocks which are even ‘worse for the wear’ since churn-and-earn commissions at lightning computerized speed are being subtracted from this illusory ‘enhanced value’ which in reality doesn’t exist at all. ( Such manipulations from currency translation also provide ‘arbitrage opportunities’ though similarly largely ultimately subtracted from no real value being created. ) This is why fraudulent wall street loves the fed’s QE’s and dollar debasement / over-printing / creating and also why it’s been a dismal failure and a net negative in real economic terms as seen on main street and in the decimation of the middle class and growing ranks of the poor. In the analysis of securities, this would be considered ‘the quality of earnings factor’ that goes into the assignment of a p/e multiple to the projected earnings. Sufficeth to say, this is no longer done on wall street in any real or legitimate fashion, if at all. Indeed, it’s a fair statement to say that security analysis is no longer a ‘practice’ as same was considered, once upon a time, by value investors / analysts. Who believes their pre-election year data, reports, b***s***? Theres desperation in the air and like never before! Analyst Dick Bove at Rochdale Securities says he knows why: More restrictive capital requirements and near-zero interest rates set at the Federal Reserve [cnbc explains] that make lending neither easy nor lucrative, a trend that will make it difficult for the economy to grow. “If one thinks through these limitations it can be seen that banks must shrink their balance sheets and change their business patterns to maintain their profits. What they are unlikely to do is to expand their lending activities in order to grow the economy,” Bove wrote in a lengthy banking analysis Thursday.“However, the Federal Reserve is suggesting that the economy is unlikely to grow,” he wrote. “If the Fed is prescient, then banks are facing higher loan losses, lower loan volume, and reduced margins on a wide array of banking products. The outlook is not appealing.”“Even though the United States is able to both print and borrow money, it is as bankrupt as the Europeans,” Bove wrote. “Covering deficits and paying debt with borrowed funds, some of which is newly printed, does not constitute meeting debt service requirements.”…’

Take A Lesson From 2007 And Sell Stocks Now at Forbes, Sean Hanlon August has given new meaning to the dog days of summer as the broad equity market has retracted all year-to-date gains and dropped into negative territory, all within the first couple weeks.

As written in my previous Market Commentary on July 20, our research uncovered potentially dangerous activity in the equity markets that could lead to a break and high volatility.  We presented this in that Market Commentary by the chart in Figure 1 below.  Using our proprietary research methodologies, we elected to make a major tactical move on June 17.

That move reduced all equity and high-yield bond exposure, creating 50% cash or cash equivalent allocations across all portfolios. This defensive move was shown to be prudent as volatility erupted and considerable downside was experienced in equity markets in the first week of August, as shown in Figure 2.

With this heightened volatility, we were observant that this market behavior was eerily similar to market conditions in 2007. To elaborate on this point, lets compare the S&P 500 Index for 2007 vs. the first seven months of 2011.  As you can see below in Figure 2, 2007 experienced high volatility yet remained range-bound in an upward trend (represented by the overlaid black bands).

The first half of 2011 maintained a range-bound upward trend until finally breaking sharply to the downside in the first week of August.

Of course now everyone wants to know what happens next?  Our research has no special predictive power of what may happen now that the trend has been broken. Instead, what our research is telling us is to remain extremely cautious at this time.  We have since moved client portfolios to almost 100% money markets and/or cash equivalents in all accounts.  We do maintain some high quality bond positions.

You may think But I cant make any money in money markets, they pay nothing these days!  True enough, but there are many times in ones investing lifetime where the best investment is to simply maintain principal.  That principal amount will be able to potentially purchase more in the not too distant future.

A simple example is stocks.  On April 29 of this year, $1,340 purchased the equivalent of one S&P 500 Index share.  Today, to own those same companies that make up the S&P 500 Index, the cost is below $1,200, yet the same amount of dividends is being received.  In this period preserving principal has resulted in increased investment purchasing power, income and potentially increased return.

I mentioned that last week could be a potential top. I still hold that view and would consider anywhere between today’s levels and 1,250 (MAJOR resistance) to be a spot to lighten up on longs and establish shorts.Indeed, deflation looks to be the dominate theme in the markets today. Stocks Surge Monday, But Weak Outlook Nails Netflix After-Hours  Steve Schaefer, Forbes Staff 10-24-11 Wall Street was in rally mode again to start the new week, as it appears that the latest promises out of Europe to have a resolution plan for the regions debt crisis by Wednesday are offering some form of relief.The market got an encouraging sign from Caterpillar Monday morning, after the heavy equipment maker topped consensus with its third-quarter earnings and offered an upbeat forecast for the last three months of 2011 and 2012, saying it does not expect a global recession.Shares of Caterpillar gained 5%, helping lift the Dow Jones industrial average 105 points to 11,914, the S&P 500 added 16 points to 1,254 and the Nasdaq 62 points to 2,699.The optimism faded after the close though, when a pair of big technology names sounded more cautious tones with their outlooks.Investors in Texas Instruments showed their disappointment with the chipmakers Q4 EPS guidance (43-51 cents vs. 54 expected) by punishing shares to the tune of an after-hours loss of more than 1%, but it was Netflix was really routed.The streaming video service reported a solid third quarter that easily topped the Streets consensus view, but its fourth-quarter forecast (EPS of 36-70 cents vs. $1.08 expected) was so feeble that shares plummeted more than 25% after-hours. Yesterday we presented the complete must watch Ray Dalio interview and transcript from his Charlie Rose appearance in which he explained how, in his increasingly skeptical view, we are now "out of ammunition" as there are "no more tools in the toolkit." Today, he layers on top of this rather bleak macroeconomic perspective some very disturbing observations, specifically, what the realization of the dead end situation facing monetary and discal authorities means when confronted with a violent (metaphorically) deleveraging, and a violent (quite literal) social mood. In an FT op-ed he writes; "We are in the midst of a deleveraging, we are nearly out of ammunition and we are at each others throats. Being in a deleveraging and nearly out of ammunition is a very difficult position to be in. But, being at each others throats is our biggest problem." Needless to say this won't be the first time we have found ourselves in such a predicament: one very vivid example from history beckons: "Frustrations increase, the established ways of doing things come under attack and frustrations over the ineffectiveness of government creates the perceived need for someone to gain control of the mess. Plato spoke of this dynamic. It was the reason Hitler was elected in 1933."

We have to say, the continuous unbridled enthusiastic cheerleading for the stock market to go higher has us puzzled. Yet, many of investment leaders from the big box banks and mainstream media continue to shout about buying the dip, proclaiming stocks are cheap as well as touting the merits of the one-size-fits-all balanced fund for every investor for every occasion. While we genuinely believe that today this view will lead many to financial despair, its important to recognise why this view is shared by the hands that hold the savings for many people in the World. For starters, many of the industrys largest players simply do not have the product available nor the expertise available to properly guide the average person during these dramatic economic times. We often discuss how credit markets have provided useful insights (and potential pre-emptive indications) with regard to risk appetite and whether ES should rip and today's incredible rally in HYG (the high yield credit bond ETF) is one to be aware (beware) of. The rumble of liquidity-driven hedging being unwound was very loud indeed and as spreads reach significant levels on a medium-term basis and HYG recovers its major drop in price, we wonder if the market is now less prepared to handle any downside shock especially as risk-appetite is clearly dragging even in high-concession primary issue land. Much of today's action in the high yield credit market seemed as much about catch up to each segment's relative-value as any real aggressive buying as hedges were clearly unwound. We would warn traders who use index aggregates to judge relative asset allocations between credit and equity to be very careful with this shift, as bottom-up, it does not exist yet.

Today's adjustment to the government's HARP program to get anything with a pulse as close to the discount window as possible was not the only proposal to revive the moribund US housing market. According to a new proposal by HUD, beginning this month and continuing for a year, anyone with a just $100 will be allowed to buy a HUD-owned REO home. In essence: the new buyer is merely taking over the mortgage payments in a repeat of what happened in 1970s New York along the Central Park West corridor. Granted for now it is stricly limited to only... 28 states! But it gets better: "HUDs $100 down payment incentive program can also be applied to an FHA 203k loan, which can be used to fund repairs and renovations on the home. The 203k program allows buyers to finance both the mortgage and additional money for rehabilitation needs with a single government-insured loan." Said otherwise, a $100 downpayment gives one unlimited degrees of freedom how to spend non-recourse, massively levered capital, and courtesy of money's fungibility, to even fund, shhh, the occasional iPhone. "Matt Martin, CEO of Matt Martin Real Estate Management (MMREM), says this is one of the most exciting features of the new incentive program and should drive a lot of exposure to FHAs 203k offering." Why of course it is: it will only take enterprising Americans a few weeks to realize that the latest HUD program is basically an EFSF in sheep's clothing, which provides US consumers with a Benjamin in their pocket, the ability to lever up by a factor of about two thousand (or more) and use the proceeds for pretty much anything (but make sure to call it "home repairs"). And when the HUD is stuck with hundreds of billions of non-performing, delinquent loans, what then? Why the same that will happen to the EFSF: another wholesale taxpayer funded bailout... of those who were tricky enough to figure out this latest subsidy of the global retailer base.

Instead of tackling any specific and highly volatile high frequency macroeconomic data points today (which will most likely be diametrically inverted in the next update iteration), today David Rosenberg focuses on sundry items and flights of fancy that are worth noting, such as that "the S&P 500 has recorded 62 consecutive days in which it has swung by 1% or more in intraday trading. The Dow has also closed 1% higher or lower 38 times since the beginning of August (compared with just 25 in the first seven months of the year)." Additionally, Rosie shares some views on the Paradox of thrift, i.e., that "spending on appliances, jewellery, watches, air travel, recreation vehicles, cameras, gambling is actually lower today than in 2005", on credit unions whose customers don't want to borrow money, " "Too few of its 95,000 members, most of whom live or work in five counties in the San Francisco Bay Area, want to borrow money. And too many are making extra payments on mortgages and car loans or paying off personal loans ... Provident's loan portfolio has shrunk by 25% since the end of 2008, including a 5% drop in the first nine months of this year" but most notably concludes with the observation that while the 2008 "Great Financial Crisis" was quite memorably, "I wonder whether we'll say 2008 wasn't the real crisis it was a warm-up, but the real crisis was the sovereign debt crisis in Europe....It is clear that the situation in Greece has deteriorated markedly and that the scope for any further fiscal restraint without triggering some sort of revolution is small. The only way toward fiscal sustainability to get the sovereign debt/GDP ratio down to 110% by 2020 is for investors to grant the country a jubilee of sorts and accept a 60% write-down." Naturally, France will throw up over any proposal that sees a 60% haircut Greek haircut, not so much due to Greek losses per se, but due to imminent losses when Portugal, Ireland, Italy and lastly Spain (to which four countries France has exponentially more exposure) decide to do the same as Greece and start underreporting data, striking daily, and overall just shut down their economies.

 

 

JPM Cuts First Solar Price Target To $50

Just when the world's most pummeled stock of the past year thought it may see a brief short covering rally, here comes JPMorgan: "We are establishing our Dec-2012 price target and lowering it to $50 for FSLR due to what we believe has been significant erosion in investor confidence on the longer term growth story for the solar PV sector and the company. This has resulted in significant compression of the P/S multiple for FSLR from a recent range of 4.0x to 6.0x to a 1.4x level as of late. Historically, FSLR traded at a significant premium to other Solar PV stocks. This premium continues, but to a lesser extent. We believe that investors as a group no longer view the Solar PV market as a growth sector and that the stock multiple compression for FSLR is evidence of the increasing level of pessimism the Street has towards the sector outlook." And with that the Icarus Lazarus moment for the solars is postponed indefinitely.

Silver and to a lesser extent Gold are poised to move. You can make a case for either direction. Today’s action was very constructive for commodities in general. But Gold and Silver were the weak performers. The charts show bear-flags, but stochs are in the process of reversing. Fact is, we can see what we want based on our own bias. What we are much more confident in is that in the next week, the Precious Metals will have a move of their own.  If you are in the camp that Europe must print money to solve its problems, despite the evidence that Germany is getting its way for now then put on your buying shoes. Ditto if you see Helicopter Ben cranking out more greenbacks in response to a Euro debasing or political pressures from our Keynesian overlords. If you believe that we are on a deflationary spiral, and that there simply isn’t enough money to buy anything at current inflated prices, and there will be no QE3 and that Europe will have enough (levered) money to solve their Grecian woes then get ready to sell Mortimer. Just remember that straddles don’t care which way the market goes.

Clearly all "bad" ideas are good again. Enron perfected the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) and was a master of off balance sheet guarantees. Guarantees with their own equity as collateral in many cases. SIV's are SPV's with leverage. The kind of "asset" that got Citi in huge trouble and almost took down the bank. SIV's had a special place in CDO hell, but I guess you can't keep a good idea down. Detachable insurance. So the EFSF would sell insurance that would come with a new issue bond but could be detached and sold separately? If that doesn't sound a lot like the evil enemy "CDS" than I don't know what does. The biggest detractors of CDS always seem to say it is like buying fire insurance on your neighbor's house. U never agreed with that analogy but this is definitely like buying fire insurance on a house that doesn't cover you in event of fire. The details will be interesting but they had better do as much with cash up front as possible because and ability to require cash in times of stress creates the contagion death spiral they are allegedly trying to prevent. Clearly everyone "gets it" now. What "it" is and how much damage "getting it" will cause remains to be seen.

 

 

Sudden Crude Backwardation Telegraphing Imminent Easing Episode By Fed

Commodity prices have certainly been volatile in the last few days with near-record-breaking upside shifts in some. Copper's extravaganza in the last two days was discussed earlier but it is the huge shift in the whole WTI crude complex that is perhaps more fascinating. For the first time since May 2011, Dec 11 WTI is more expensive than Dec 12 and in the last three trading days alone, the entire curve has shifted to backwardation very aggressively. This inflation-prone signal, and much chatter among Fed talking heads on 'helping' the Europeans, could perhaps help explain the strange 'strength' in the EUR as it and the USD circle the drain of fiat currencies. Gold has obviously yet to get going, but today has broken $1660 (up over $50 in the last few days).

 

 

Trichet Interrupts Speech Calling For Formation Of European Finance Ministry, Booed Off By German Students

Earlier today we transcribed the speech by outgoing ECB president Trichet in which he called for the formation of a European Ministry of Finance coupled with what is essentially a requirement for the abdication of national sovereignty of those less than worthy countries, together with some less than flattering commentary. It appears a few people at least were not too happy with the call for the formation of the United Empire of Europe, at Humboldt University where the speech was delivered. Bloomberg reports that the "ECB president interrupted during speech in Berlin. Banners held up by students in audience reading no more money for banks, and say no to debt tyranny. Two weeks ago, Marc Faber provoked the fury of a broad segment of the population by daring to tell America that it is lazy, needs to work more, and is overly-reliant on a welfare government which is an eager parasite of the welfare system cocoon in which it has wrapped the majority of the population knowing full well it can get away with anything due to threats it can pull the (otherwise insolvent) social safety net at any given moment if the status quo is threatened. Needless to say, European readers were delighted and amused by Faber's statements. We wonder, then, what the US (and correspondingly, European) response will be to the news that last week it was the turn of Jin Liqun, chairman of the China Investment Corporation (CIC), the sovereign wealth fund all too often (by the overeager European media) tasked with bailing out, to channel Faber: "Europe is not really short of money. Europe needs to give a clear picture to the Europeans themselves and to the rest of the world that their problems could be worked out. The root cause of the trouble is the over-burdened welfare system, built up since the Second World War in Europe - the sloth-inducing, indolence-inducing labour laws. People need to work a bit harder, they need to work a bit longer, and they should be more innovative. We (the Chinese) work like crazy." Translation: China is finally announcing that it is unhappy with the work output of its debt slaves. And since China, courtesy of its trade surplus or something, will sooner or later also have to apply the same bailout hypermathematics which indicate that despite having to bail out its own banking system it can bail out the world, expect comparable announcements about its latest shipment of debt slaves situated conveniently between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
