Hints of Rising Price Risks

Gold has edged higher to pressure $1600 once again as both the dollar and stocks are correcting. A convincing move back above $1600 would ease short-term pressure on the downside.

A bigger than expected rise in February CPI, on the heels of a 0.7% jump in PPI earlier this week, has resulted in heightened concerns about inflation. This is helping to underpin gold ahead of the range lows.

Haruhiko Kuroda has been confirmed as the next Bank of Japan, as was widely expected. Now it becomes a question of how quickly the BoJ will push for new monetary stimulus. There are persistent rumors that an emergency meeting will occur in advance of the scheduled policy board meeting on April 3 - 4.

The yen is actually firming modestly on position squaring, but the Abe/Kuroda regime in Japan likely bodes ill for the yen. When details of the new BoJ policy start coming out, look for gold to resume its uptrend against the yen. At that point, we'll also be watching for responses from the other major central banks to see if there will be a significant escalation to the ongoing currency wars.
